Farm Description:

It's been a few years now since farmers like Aba Mecha have been given the opportunity to export their own coffee. In previous years, all private operations big and small had to sell their coffee through the government-run Ethiopia Commodity Exchange and only cooperatives and unions were exempt. That probably sounds worse than it really was as government pricing and payments were actually stringently tracked and traceable. But an issue presented to the buyer is that ECX coffee was stripped of provenance, save origin, so we never knew where it came from. This farmer's coffee, for example, would've just been blended off with other coffees of a similar grade and sold as "Limu Grade 1". All that changed in 2018, when farmers owning a certain number of trees were given the opportunity to apply for their own export license in the hopes of selling to international buyers in a more direct way. Aba Mecha's 7 hectare farm sits at 2000 meters above sea level, and is located in Beshasha town, not far from Agaro. He only produces dry process coffee, drying whole cherry in roughy 15-20 days on raised beds adjacent to his farm. His farm is on the smaller side of our single farm purchases from Ethiopia, and at a mere 20 bags, the lot size is on the small side too.
